Why transferring your points can be so awesome!

Transferrable points  (points earned from programs like Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Venture Miles, or Citi ThankYou Points) can often be the ultimate currency in the points and miles world, granting you unparalleled versatility. With these points, you can maximize your travel by transferring your points to airline and hotel partners and often using fewer points for awards.

When should you transfer your points?

You want to transfer your points when it makes fiscal sense. For example, if I am booking The Grand Hyatt Cyprus and looking at booking through Chase Travel℠, it will cost me anywhere from 20k to 25k points. However, if I transfer my Chase points to Hyatt, I can book that property for only 12k to 15k points.

There are times when transferring isn’t going to make sense. Do the math and check the different options!

Important things to know about transferring points!

Once you learn how to transfer, it can be magical! However, here are a few things you need to know!

Once you transfer your points, they can not be moved back.

Let’s say you have 10k Amex Membership Rewards that you want to transfer to Delta SkyMiles. You initiate your transfer and 10k Amex Rewards are removed from your Amex account and are now sitting pretty inside your Delta SkyMiles account as Skymiles. Since they are now SkyMiles you CAN NOT move them back to Amex Membership Rewards. You can use them as normal SkyMiles, but they won’t ever be Amex Membership Rewards again. This is true of all the different transferrable points. Once you park your points in a loyalty program, you can’t move them back.

Not all credit card points transfer to all airlines or hotels.

This is why the Transfer Partner Master Lists are so helpful! They break down what points can be transferred to which airlines and hotels. This will help you strategize and use your points wisely!

How to Transfer Your Points

You transfer your points online within your credit card account. For example, if you want to transfer Capital One Miles to Flying Blue Miles, you will need to log into your Capital One Account, connect your Flying Blue Account, and then start the transfer process.

Transfer minimum

Most hotels and airlines require a “minimum” transfer amount or increment. Usually, the amount is 1k points. This means I need to transfer at least 1000 points each transfer, and sometimes I might need to round up. For example, if you want to transfer your Chase points to Southwest to book a flight that is 7,500 on Southwest, you will need to transfer 8,000 points from Chase.

This is one of THE best cards for any traveler. Being able to use Chase Travel℠ or transfer these points to transfer partners makes it very flexible. At a minimum, this card’s value is $1,500 when using the travel portal, but we value Chase points much higher per point because of their value when transferred to travel partners like Southwest, United, Hyatt, or Marriott. And, if you book smart, then this welcome bonus can be worth thousands and thousands! If that wasn’t enough, this card includes 3X the points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent on travel year annually and it has no foreign transaction fees!
