The Big News: Fiji Airways Became SOOO Easy to Book

Fiji Airways is the national carrier and offers the most direct flights to Fiji from the United States. For years, booking Fiji Airways award flights at a lower rate was challenging. But recent partnership changes have opened up incredible opportunities.

You now have TWO major ways to book Fiji Airways:

1. American Airlines AAdvantage Miles (Transfer Partner w/Citi Thank You Points!)

American Airlines and Fiji Airways have been partners (through the OneWorld alliance), but what's changed is that NOW you can easily earn American Airlines miles through Citi's transfer partnership with ThankYou points.

Economy Class Pricing:

  • Around 56,000 AAdvantage miles round-trip from the US West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco)
  • Award availability is generally good

Business Class Pricing:

  • Around 110,000 to 230,000 miles one-way (pricing varies)
  • Lie-flat seats on long-haul flights
  • Priority check-in and other premium benefits
  • Availability is trickier for business class

How to Book: Search on AA.com for award flights. Fiji Airways award space has pretty decent availability, and the booking process is straightforward for AAdvantage members. If you will be traveling during peak season, during the holidays, or if you have a large family, I suggest trying to snag your seats about 9 months in advance just to be sure you grab that availability.

Best Credit Cards to Earn AAdvantage Miles: The fastest way to earn American Airlines miles is through Citi co-branded credit cards and Citi cards that earn Thank You Points. Citi is the exclusive credit card issuer for AAdvantage cards, and they offer several great options:

2. Alaska Airlines (Through ATMOS Rewards)

Alaska Airlines recently merged its loyalty program with Hawaiian Airlines to create ATMOS™ Rewards points. This is another excellent option for booking Fiji Airways.

Why Alaska/ATMOS is Great:

  • Competitive award pricing around 75,000 round-trip
  • Good award availability on partner airlines
  • Often has promotional bonuses
  • No extra carrier charges on many partner bookings

Economy Class: Typically 60,000 to 75,000 miles round-trip from US West Coast cities. Business Class: Around 110,000 to 120,000 miles one-way.

3. Other Airline Partners

Qantas Points: If you're coming from Australia or have Qantas points, you can book Fiji Airways through the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. This is particularly useful if you want a free stopover in Fiji on your way to other South Pacific destinations.

United Airlines: United doesn't partner directly with Fiji Airways; they fly their own nonstop flights from San Francisco to Fiji. Award tickets start at 35,000 to 40,000 miles one-way in economy class.

Our Strategy: Positioning & Using Domestic and International Routes

What if you don't live on the West Coast, BUT you want to take advantage of those direct West Coast to Fiji flights? You can position your flights. Here's exactly how we booked our Thanksgiving trip using positioning:

  • SLC to LAX on Delta: We used American Express Membership Rewards points (11,000 each, transferred to Delta) and set up price trackers to book when award availability was at its lowest. Out-of-pocket: $11.60 per person in taxes.
  • LAX to Nadi (NAN) on Fiji Airways: We booked through American Airlines at 56,000 miles each. The direct flight from Los Angeles is the easiest route. Keep in mind the taxes are about $100 to $150 per person round-trip.

📍 What is a Positioning Flight? A positioning flight is a separate ticket you book to get from your home airport to a city with better award availability or pricing. For example, if you live in Salt Lake City but the best Fiji award flights depart from Los Angeles, you'd book a positioning flight (SLC → LAX) before your main international flight (LAX → Fiji).

Why use positioning flights?

  • Save 20,000 to 50,000 points on the main ticket
  • Access nonstop flights that don't exist from your home airport
  • Book cheaper award tickets from major hubs like Los Angeles, San Francisco, JFK, Boston, or Dallas

Pro tip: Book positioning flights on a separate reservation using a different loyalty program and give yourself plenty of time in between. This gives you flexibility if delays happen.

Pro Tip: If you're flexible with dates and want to add Australia to your trip, you can often find award flights that include a stopover in Fiji on your way to Sydney or other Australian cities. This is a sweet spot for maximizing value.

Where to Stay in Fiji on Points

The hotels are where Fiji really shines for point redemptions. Three of the four major hotel brands (Marriott, Hilton, and IHG) have Fiji properties that you can easily book with points for your family.

Marriott Bonvoy Properties

Usually, Marriott properties have some of the highest redemption rates; however, Fiji is a unique spot where you can book a beautiful, family-friendly 4- or 5-star resort for relatively few points. We're staying at the Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island. It's a private island featuring beachfront bungalows, private plunge pools, and a range of incredible family activities.

Why We Love It:

  • 5-star property that we booked for 132,000 Marriott Bonvoy points over 5 nights (we used the 5th night free offer that Marriott offers!)
  • Offers amazing cultural village visits, water sports, fish feeding, fishing and snorkeling tours
  • Private island experience
  • Tours to private sandbars, Castaway Island, and shark snorkeling

Note: Fijian law prohibits young children from staying in villas or bungalows located over the water. However, beachfront bungalows are stunning, and young children can stay in them. (We stayed beachfront and loved it.)

  • Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay: Another excellent choice, often at lower point levels
  • Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort: Mainland option with easy access

  • The Westin Fiji Golf Resort & Spa: A more romantic space, excellent for honeymoons. Availability is a bit harder to find on points here, so look further in advance if needed.

Why We Chose Sheraton Tokoriki

We really wanted to get off the main island and experience a more secluded island; however, most of the properties on those more secluded islands are expensive... like stupid expensive. We found that this resort offered the best balance between seclusion and local experiences, but without the extremely high price tag.

Hilton Properties

Hilton also has strong representation in Fiji, and award availability tends to be good! They also have properties that can be booked for very few points, so it's a great place to look if you have a stash of Amex or Hilton points! Remember that Hilton points are valued lower BUT you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards to Hilton at a 1:2 ratio. So if you transfer 25,000 Amex Membership Rewards, you will actually have 50,000 Hilton points!

Hot Tip: If you have any sort of Hilton status, you'll get the 5th night free on your award bookings!

  • Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa: Flagship property on Denarau Island with easy airport access and family-friendly amenities
  • DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Fiji - Sonaisali Island: Small island just off the coast of the main island with beachfront rooms starting at just 19k Amex Membership Rewards a night OR 37,000 Hilton Honors Points!
  • Nanuku Resort, a SLH Hotel: Where we're staying! One of Fiji's most exclusive and family-friendly properties, bookable with Hilton points or through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, and one of my favorite places I have ever stayed.
  • Raiwasa Private Resort, a SLH: Boutique adults-only resort with private villas and personalized service

How to Earn Hilton Points: There are several American Express co-branded cards that earn Hilton points directly, but here's a better strategy most people miss: American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio. Plus, there are usually at least 2 to 3 transfer bonuses a year where you can get even more points for each point you transfer!

This means the American Express® Gold Card (with its current offer of up to 100,000 points) can be transferred directly to Hilton for your Fiji hotel stays. The beauty of this approach? You can get over 200,000 Hilton points from this one card OR you can get flexibility. Those same Membership Rewards points can also transfer to Marriott Bonvoy, Delta, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, and more, giving you options for both flights and hotels from a single card.

The actual value of points at Fiji's Hilton properties is exceptional. You're getting luxury resort experiences, and in the case of the SLH properties, you're accessing boutique luxury that would cost $800 to $1,500+ per night in cash.

Luxury: Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts

For our second property, we stayed at the famous Nanuku Resort, which we booked through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, though you can also book this exact property through Hilton. We had credits to use, and we decided this was the perfect property to use them at, and we stacked our credits with points!

The Strategy:

  • Applied our annual American Express® Platinum Card travel credit to the stay
  • Covered the remaining cost with points
  • Received upgrade eligibility, free breakfast, and other select American Express benefits
  • As we've mentioned, this property is also bookable through Hilton, giving you options

IHG Properties (Honorable Mention)

IHG has a smaller but solid presence in Fiji with four properties, though they're not all in beach resort locations:

IHG Options in Fiji:

  • InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa: Luxury beachfront resort on Natadola Beach with 35 acres of tropical gardens, championship golf course, and multiple dining options
  • InterContinental Grand Pacific Hotel Suva: Historic luxury hotel in the capital city (featured on the Fijian $10 note), perfect for combining business with leisure

Note: The InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is the standout property for a true Fiji resort experience, while the Suva properties are better suited for business travelers or those wanting to explore Fiji's capital city. 4. Chase Business & Personal Cards

Chase is running some of the best offers we've seen right now, and this is where a big chunk of your Fiji points could come from.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: My top Chase pick for Fiji right now. It has an elevated offer of 100,000 points, a low annual fee, and it transfers Chase Ultimate Rewards straight to Marriott Bonvoy AND United, both of which you can use for this trip. If you only add one Chase card, make it this one.

Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card and Ink Business Cash® Credit Card: If you have any side income or a small business, these are HUGE right now, each with a 100,000 point elevated offer and no annual fee. Here's the catch most people miss: on their own, the points these two cards earn act like cash back, so you can't send them to travel partners directly. To transfer those points to Marriott Bonvoy (or to United for your Fiji flights), you'll need to pair them with a card that unlocks transfers, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. Once they're combined, all those points become fully transferable!

Quick note on United: Chase points transfer to United at 1:1, and United flies its own route to Fiji. Just know those flights aren't direct and some of the layovers run long, so weigh that against the nonstop Fiji Airways options.

5. Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

6. Hilton Honors American Express Cards

Several Fiji resorts are part of the Hilton portfolio. The Hilton Honors American Express Card can be valuable, but I recommend getting an Amex Membership Rewards card first since those points transfer to Hilton at a 1:2 ratio while also giving you flexibility for other programs.

Step-By-Step: How to Book Fiji on Points

Phase 1: Get the Right Credit Cards

We recommend the first card you apply for for Fiji is the American Express® Gold Card (check for the elevated offer of up to 100k points), the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card,  or the Citi Strata Premier® Card.

  • Meet minimum spend
  • Earn welcome bonus

If you have good credit and want to maximize points, add:

  • AA.com: Search American Airlines for Fiji Airways availability, just search the mileage bookings and the Fiji Airways flights will pop up instantly if they are available.
  • AlaskaAir.com: Search ATMOS partners
  • United.com: Search United's own flights if using Chase points
  • Google Flights: Check cash prices to identify low-demand dates
  • Award availability calendars: Look for patterns and availability

When to Book:

  • International routes typically release 330+ days in advance
  • Award availability can fluctuate
  • Set up alerts for your desired dates
  • Be flexible with travel dates for the best options

Our Experience: We set up price trackers and booked flights as soon as they reached the minimum number of points. Flexibility by a few days saved us a lot in points. We ended up booking our flights about 10 months in advance. Although with the current calendar, you don't need to book them nearly as far in advance.

Phase 3: Book Hotels

Strategy:

  • Search the property you want for award availability
  • Compare point values vs cash prices
  • Consider calendar "sweet spots." We booked our Sheraton property almost 9 months in advance. Those dates have since increased about 100k points total for the stay so booking early is key here, as the further they are booked out, the lower they are right now. Then you can monitor, and if the rates go down, you can just cancel and rebook at the lower rate.

For Luxury Properties:

  • Check Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts for added benefits (requires American Express® Platinum Card)
  • Compare brands
  • Look for promotional offers on free nights

Phase 4: Transfers and Ground Transportation

This is where you'll probably spend actual cash. Plan for:

  • Ferry to Private Islands: $50 to $300 per person, depending on the resort and island.
  • Helicopter Transfers: $400 to $800 per person (we opted for the ferry instead).
  • Airport Transfers: $20 to $80, depending on distance and whether it's included in your stay

Our Total Out-of-Pocket for our accommodations and flights to Fiji: $408 (flight taxes/fees for the three of us)

Advanced Tips for Maximum Value

Use Positioning Flights Strategically

Flying from the US West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco) to Fiji is significantly cheaper in points than flying from other US cities. Consider a positioning flight to LAX first, then check SFO.

Take Advantage of Free Stopovers

Fiji Airways allows a free stopover in Fiji when flying to Australia or New Zealand. This is an incredible way to visit multiple South Pacific destinations on one award ticket.

Book Early for Business Class

Fiji Airways business class award space fills up quickly. If you want lie-flat seats and premium service, book as soon as award flights become available.

Business class costs can reach 230,000+ points one-way through American Airlines. That's a lot of points, but potentially worth it for long-haul flights if you're using points you've accumulated over time or through strategic credit card bonuses.

Combine Points + Cash When Needed

Don't be afraid to use a combination of points for flights and hotels while paying cash for ground transportation. The goal is to reduce your total trip cost, not necessarily to book everything on points. For example, we used a Platinum travel credit and then points for our Nanuku stay.

Watch for Elevated Credit Card Offers

Credit card offers fluctuate. The best time to apply is when there's an elevated offer with extra points. Right now:
